Abu Concession
Okavango Delta | Botswana
The Abu Concession is located in the south west of the Okavango Delta in an area of some 173,000ha. All of the Delta's habitat types are represented on this concession, Seasonal floodplains, channels, lagoons and palm islands are characteristic in the north of the area, with sandveld drier lands to be found in the west. In the north-east sector, good floods from May - Sept are usual, and this is the time to see larger concentrations of big game at the drier camps, with the additional bonus of being able to travel in mokoros at the wet camps.
For the remainder of the year, this is largely a dry safari area, with a fantastic reputation for viewing high concentrations of wildlife. Ilala and wild date palms are found on the sandy islands along with deep-blue channels and lagoons and verdant green floodplains. The best time to visit is to avoid the rains, so any time from late April/May to around mid–end December would suit this sort of adventure.
The excellent Seba Camp is the only 'regular' safari lodge here. The other 2 luxury camps are specialist destinations; Abu Camp offers elephant-back safaris, whilst Macatoo Camp concentrates on high-quality horse-back safaris. Unfortunately, Villa Okavango has closed permanently. Access to all 3 camps is by fly-in and upon landing transfer to your camp is by boat or road, depending on the water levels.
There is plenty of big game in the Abu Concession including giraffe, buffalo, elephant, zebra, blue wildebeest, spotted hyena, warthog, impala, (the more elusive) leopard, tsessebe, (rare sightings of) African wild dog and red lechwe. Lions often prowl through the concession and if not seen can certainly be heard roaring at night.
Nearly 400 bird species are found here. Mokoro trips are an excellent means of transport for bird viewing, in particular malachite kingfisher, white-browed coucal, luapula cisticola, pied kingfisher, rufous-bellied heron and great egret.
Include day and night game drives, fishing and mokoro expeditions. The camp is well- known for it's elephant interactions, and visitors permitted, when safe, to get very close to them to learn about their lifestyle.
Explore the Okavango Delta from atop an elephant. This has to be the top safari experience ever!
A horse is the perfect way to explore this remote area of Botswana. Riding safaris are offered in small groups & last for about 7 days
