NG 24 is a community-based conservation area that used to be a hunting concession. It is situated in the north-centre of the Okavango Delta. As it borders the Moremi Game Reserve, the area around Camp Okavango benefits from both permanent and seasonal swamp environments. Access to NG 24 is by fly-in and transfer by boat.

Previously the communities did not benefit from any activities. Recent legislation has changed the rights of these people, who now benefit directly from their immediate natural resources. Local and regional bodies now profit from wildlife and other wild resources in their very own communal areas. They have been relatively successful in terms of generating income and employment, whilst focusing on proper financial management, combined with appropriate and relevant programs to satisfy community members needs.

There are 3 luxury tented camps in NG 24:

1. Camp Okavango.
2. Xugana Island Lodge.
3. Shindi Island Camp.

General information:

• Size of NG 24 – 530km².
• People in the are include the Mbukushu, Herero and G//anikwe San.
• Community tourism, mokoro (dug-out canoe) tours, basketry and other craft sales are the main sources of income

Lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, elephant, hippo, buffalo, zebra, warthog, red lechwe, sitatunga, common waterbuck, greater cane rat, water (marsh) mongoose and Cape clawless otter.

African and lesser jacana, African darter, eastern white pelican, African spoonbill, warblers, cisticolas and weavers are characteristic of the area. Herons, egrets, storks and cormorants nest in the tangled swamp fig.

The day water-lily and water chestnut float on top of the waaters of the delta while water lettuce is a submerged plant which many fish, frogs and aquatic insects use to deposit their eggs. Rooted permanent plants dominate the permanent swamp examples such as papyrus grow up to 5m tall. Common reed and bulrush also form dense stands as does other tall grasses.
