Xigera Concession

Moremi Reserve | Okavango Delta | Botswana

The Xigera (pronounced kee-jeh-rah) Concession is situated in the central region of the Okavango Delta, specifically to the north and west of Chief's Island, the former royal hunting grounds of Chief Moremi. Technically it is in the NG28 concession, but effectively became part of the Moremi Game Reserve in 1992. The concession surrounds Paradise Island and is nestled in a magnificent riverine forest. The habitat is characterized by calm, permanent waterways, floodplains and lagoons, and is home to a prolific diversity of flora and fauna.

The Xigera Concession is not for those seeking the big 5, but is more of a plains game and bird viewing sort of place. So experience the magic of this part of the Okavango by mokoro, walking and for the more adventurous, camp out on some of its green islands! The Okavango born tribesmen are your guides, born a stones throw away from the present location of Xigera Camp, and they know every twist and turn of the wetlands.

Access to Xigera Concession and its luxury tented camp, Xigera Camp, is by fly-in and transfer by road, via a short flight from either Maun or Kasane.

Wildlife:

Although it is considered to be an area of permanent water, you might be surprised by the presence of lion, leopard, hyaena and buffalo on the islands. These animals will happily wade and swim between islands in search of food. Hippo and crocs frequent the lagoons and bushbuck, southern giraffe, impala, kudu, red lechwe, sitatunga, waterbuck, Cape mountain zebra, warthog and chacma baboon are also around.

Flora:

The tiny palm islands and countless waterways are covered in lilies, that open and close in the daylight hours. Dusky bream and silver squeaker fish can be seen in the clear waters.

Ornithology:

Birdlife is abundant with over 400 species and in particular the colourful coppery tailed coucals, malachite kingfishers and purple gallinules. Expect to spot great and slaty egrets, green-backed heron, black-shouldered kite, African fish eagle, crowned lapwing plover, African skimmer, Cape turtle dove, emerald spotted wood-dove, Meyer’s parrot, grey lourie, Senegal coucal, little bee-eater, lilac-breasted roller, African grey hornbill, crested barbet, fort-tailed drongo, dark-capped bulbul, a variety of cisticola, red-billed oxpecker, red-shouldered widow, and Okavango hinged terrapin. A displaying African Goshawk can often be seen in the morning.

Xigera Mokoro and Walking Trail:

It is possible to participate in a Xigera Mokoro and Walking Trail as soon as you land at the airstrip. You are met by your guides and driven to the start point, before hopping into your mokoro, (dug-out) canoe and off you go on a 2-night adventure into the untamed wilderness! Trips run from mid-May to October.
