Little Vumbura
Okavango Delta | Botswana
Little Vumbura is a glorious little tented camp nestled in an ancient Okavango Delta forest, not far from its sister (and larger) camp - Vumbura Plains Camp. As it is situated north of Mombo in a private reserve, and borders the Moremi Game Reserve, it offers an array of activities on either land or water. This area can only be accessed by aircraft, and if the water levels are high in winter, a mokoro/boat will transfer guests to the camp.
Little Vumbura (and Vumbura Plains) are part of a community participation project that brings the benefits of eco-tourism to the communities that live in around the Okavango Delta, thereby bringing them to the fore of mainstream tourism. The villagers who live to the north of the Okavango have been granted the rights to this area, which allow them to rightly derive direct benefits from the wildlife, through significant concession fees, employment opportunities and training.
The main area of the camp offers a pub, dining room and lounge under canvas on spacious decking. A relaxed reading area overlooks the flood plains while visitors can also escape from those scorching summer days in the large enclosed plunge pool, which is situated on a wooden deck and equipped with sun loungers and a shaded area.
The camp is equipped with a 220v generator which produces electricity to the kitchen and main areas when guests are away. On their return from daily activities, the generators are usually turned off to maintain a peaceful environment. Tents are run on a 12v battery to power the lights and fans. Hair-dryers and other similar equipment are not catered for. Batteries for cameras can be charged on the generator while guests are out; therefore visitors are urged to bring a spare battery and charging unit.
Accommodation is in 4 spacious tents, 3 of which offer ¾ twin beds as well as 1 king-sized honeymoon tent. They are all equipped with a fan, and an en-suite bathroom that includes hot and cold running water, a shower, and a flush toilet. Complementary soaps, shampoos and insect repellent are provided. The outdoor shower offers a refreshing douche under the stars.
Little Vumbura is renown for it's game viewing. Large buffalo and elephant herds are not uncommon and sable, red lechwe, tsessebe and waterbuck are usually wary of incoming lion, cheetah and leopard. There are plenty of hippo and and crocs to be viewed on the water activities.
