Macatoo Camp & Horse Riding Safaris
Okavango Delta | Botswana
Macatoo Camp is situated in the Abu Concession (NG26) west of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Set on a palm fringed island, surrounded by endless grassy plains, the water meadows and seasonal lagoons are bursting with life. Wildlife migrations and seasonal changes ensure no two safaris are the same.
The focus here is more about the pursuits offered, rather than on environmental or wildlife participation. The main activity here is horseback safaris with a variety of scenic routes and trails followed from the camp. The operation was set up in 1994 by Sarah-Jane Gullick. Most of the resident Okavango game will treat you and your horse as a single. So canter with wild animals, such as giraffe and zebras, and experience the interactions between wild animals and horses – a much better option than by vehicle.
Such is the popularity of this camp, it is advisable to make advanced bookings. Access is by fly-in and transfer from Abu airstrip only, a short flight on from Maun or Kasane. Driving here is totally impractical.
As the main reason is to experience horse-riding, it is best to avoid the rains. Late April / May to around the mid-end of December would be the best time to visit. They do not take beginners and if they think your riding is not up to standard, you will not be permitted to ride. Non-riding partners are welcome and can spend their time on game drives and other activities, but it is not recommended for people with disabilities.
Centrally located on site is a large furnished mess tent and a private pool. There is a spacious verandah with armchairs overlooking the floodplain, dotted with palm trees. Accommodation is in 6 large, walk-in, twin bedded tents. An en-suite shower and toilet is standard.
- Riding groups
- Consist of a maximum of 6–8 guests, and a typical 7-day trip would include a few nights spent out at a fly-camp away from the main camp. These trips usually start and end on Tuesdays and Fridays.
- Safaris:
- Are for a minimum of 7 nights duration. They begin on arrival in camp with an introductory talk on the safari, and a safety briefing. You will be accompanied by 2 guides on each riding safari; they carry a first- aid kit, rifle and radio.
- Riding ability
- Safaris are for experienced riders aged 12 years and over.
- Riders over 60 need to be 'riding fit' and strong.
- Trips usually involve about 4-6hrs in the saddle daily.
- Riders
- Need to feel competent about keeping up with their group.
- Capable of riding at all paces, rising to the trot and controlling your horse at the canter.
- Required to gallop out of trouble.
- The horses
- Are a variety of thoroughbreds.
- Namibian Hanovarians, Arabs and Kalahari-Arab cross-breeds.
- Height ranges from 14 - 16.2 hands (140 - 165cm).
- Weight limits
- There’s a weight limit of 15 stone per person (210lbs or 95kg).
- Special arrangements for advanced riders over this limit can be made.
- Tack and clothes
- Good quality English- and Western-style trail saddles are supplied, each with its own water bottle. Loan of riders half-chaps is possible.
- Long leather boots are impractical.
- You must bring you own hard hat or safety helmet.
- Macatoo Camp suggest visitors wear their riding clothes and boots on the plane, and bring their hat and wash bag as hand luggage, in case your luggage gets delayed.
- Other activities
- The occasional game drive, nature walk or night drive can be organized. Boating, canoeing and fishing are also possible, depending on seasonal water levels.
