Seba Camp
Okavango Delta | Botswana
Seba Camp is a newly built luxury safari camp, situated on the south-western side of Botswana's Okavango Delta. It has been constructed in and amongst sycamore and leadwood trees, themselves an integral part of an ancient riverine forest system, all overlooking a fabulously interesting lagoon.
It is in the same concession as the renowned Abu Camp (and it's Elephant Riding Safaris) this is a splendid location for water-based activities and great for birding. The camp is named after Seba, one of the elephants historically released from nearby Abu Camp, and means whisper in a local language. Access to Seba Camp is by fly-into Abu airstrip and transfer is by a 5 min drive. Seba airfield is a 30min scenic flight from Maun.
The main area consists of 2 open-sided wooden structures, one of which houses the dining room, and the other contains the lounge area. Both buildings are decorated with traditional Botswana basketwork and other local artefacts. In the lounge area, guests can relax on the comfortable sofas and armchairs, along with a small library of books and magazines supplied for your enjoyment.
In front of the dining area, there is a small, well-stocked bar with additional ground-level seating. To the fore of the lounge area, a circle of directors chairs surrounding a fire-pit, is the place to head for after-dinner, wildlife one-upmanship tales. To the rear is another decked area containing a smashing little swimming pool, complete with a few sun-loungers and umbrellas; perfect for fending off the belting-hot Botswana afternoon sunshine.
The standard of food at Seba is consistently excellent. Meals are served on the deck of the main lodge, which overlooks the lagoon, or in the shady area below, a few feet from that feature. A light breakfast is served before the morning's activity and on your return a buffet-style brunch offers a variety of dishes; for example beef quiche and a selection of salads, fruit, cheese and crackers. A braai of chicken kebabs, lamb chops and boerewors, served with squash, creamed spinach, pap and onion marmalade emphasize the variety and imagination of bush camp fare.
A tea-time snack is served around 16h00 before your evening activity, and a delicious 3-course dinner awaits at around 20h00, complemented by a fine selection of wines, beers and spirits.
The catering staff can accommodate special dietary requirements with advanced notice and can prepare child-friendly meals if required.
Electricity is supplied by a generator that is turned off when guests return from activities. This reverts the camp to its original peaceful and tranquil noise levels. A system of inverters and batteries kick in, powering batteries that are used for lights/fans etc.
Accommodation is in 5 luxurious bedrooms, 4 double/twin, and 1 family unit. The en-suite bathroom has tiled slate flooring, a sink (with hot and cold running water) and a large mirror. The flushing loo is separated from the main bathroom area by a canvas wall and curtain, and the shower is built into the other corner, slightly sunken, and has a giant 'rain-shower' style shower head.
Each room is beautifully individually furnished, and the wooden floors are scattered with rugs. There is a ceiling fan over the bed. Dressing gowns, fluffy towels and various toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, ear-buds and cotton wool are provided, as are mosquito repellent and coils.
The rather unusual double-decker family room, sleeps 4, has its own plunge pool, toy box and hide-away sandpit. All rooms are raised up on wooden decks and linked by sandy pathways. A small table, armchair, and luggage rack, along with plenty of hanging space and shelving are standard. There are electronic safes in every room.
As dangerous animals roam freely and the camp is unfenced, each room is equipped with an alarm horn in case of an emergency, and guests are escorted to their accommodation after dark.Lions are present in and around the camp, constantly on the lookout to attack unsuspecting plains game such as giraffe, zebra, impala, tsessebe, red lechwe and wildebeest. There are also big herds of elephant and buffalo.
Long crested eagle, Dickinson's kestrel, red billed wood-hoopoe, pink throated longclaws and Pel's fishing owl, are amongst over 380 species recorded in the area. Wattled cranes stepping through lush grass, saddle billed storks hunt for frogs and slaty egrets, black egrets and rufous bellied heron's abound.
- Activities
- The camp offers a variety of water and land-based activities, depending on the water levels. There will be an opportunity to the visit and participate on an elephant-back safari with Abu and his herd of elephants, if so desired at Abu Camp.
- Other interests
