Xugana Island Lodge
Okavango Delta | Botswana
Xugana Island Lodge is situated on an island of the same name, at the heart of the Okavango Delta. As it neighbours the Moremi Game Reserve, it is arguably on one of the most spectacular permanent water sites in the delta, overlooking the Xugana Lagoon. Access to Xugana Island Lodge is by light aircraft from Kasane and Maun airfields with a transfer by boat from either Camp Moremi or Camp Okavango.
Xugana Island Lodge is situated in the permanent swamp area of the Okavango Delta. Specifically it is an area of some 6,000km², typified by groves of wild date palm (Phoenix reclinata), beds of papyrus, forest bordered islands and lagoons peppered with waterlilies. Characteristic of areas permanently inundated with water on the swamp, are the domination by floating-leaved plants, such as the Day Waterlily (Nymphaea nouchali) and Water Chestnut (Trapa natans). African and lesser jacana, painted reed frog and aquatic insects are typical.
The lounge, bar and dining areas are set back under an ebony and mangosteen tree canopy. The open-sided thatched structure, allows for uninterrupted views of the surrounding environment. Xugana Island Lodge prides itself on its delicious al fresco meals, served in its open boma (outside dining area) under the shade of fig and leadwood trees. Guests enjoy overlooking the Xugana Lagoon whilst they wine and dine by candlelight. After a few drinks in the cocktail bar, why not pop into the curio shop? A loved one or dear friend will be delighted with a 2m, one-eared, three-legged giraffe for a birthday present! The swimming pool, located in a garden setting in the centre of the island, is a great place to chill and relax.
Accommodation is in 8 spacious elevated reed and thatch chalets. They are situated on the shaded forest fringe of the island, each with a lagoon view. Twin beds, en-suite facilities, with walk in showers, overhead fans and a private deck are standard. Hot water bottles provided for those cold winter nights.
Power is supplied from a AC220v generator, available during the day and evening. Inverted 12-volt DC lighting is supplied for night time use, after the generator has been switched off. Camera batteries can be recharged.
Elephants, hippo, a few crocs and herds of 'hoof stock' are all found in the area of Xugana Island Lodge.
- Waterways exploration
- As Xugana is not a 'dry camp', exploring the Delta is by motorboat or mokoro, which lends a more relaxed pace to your holiday. The boat cruises can be combined with a walking safari, a great way to sneak up on some of the larger animals, without disturbing them. Camera's at the ready!
- Fishing
- Anglers will revel at the chance to catch bream and tigerfish.
- Bird-watching
- Ornithologists of any standard should head for Xugana Island Lodge. Reed cormorant, African darter, eastern white pelican, African spoonbill, goliath heron, egrets, herons, glossy ibis, sacred ibis, storks, geese and ducks are amongst many species that have been recorded in the area.
