Garden Lodge
Kasane | Botswana
The Garden Lodge is situated in the small but thriving northern Botswana town of Kasane. Its setting, on the banks of the Chobe River, make it the perfect stopover for routes to Victoria Falls (70km), Kazungula (16km) and it is only 300km from the Okavango Delta. The famous Chobe National Park's entrance is only 2km from the lodge.
The lounge and dining room are furnished in teak and wicker and all of the décor is from either Botswana or surrounding countries. Guests can relax inside under the thatched roof, or outside by by the boma. The well-kept garden is a feature at the lodge. The combination of unlimited water and constant sunshine allows hibiscus, frangipani, bougainvillea, banana and paw paw to grpw, attracting the prolific birdlife to the flowers and fruits. The upstairs lounge overlooks the garden, and is decorated with African baskets and masks. There is also a great swimming pool with cushioned seating areas to chill out and relax.
Meals are taken at the large dining table, which is also an opportunity to meet other travellers and exchange wildlife sightings and experiences. Guests start the day with a choice of a continental or an English breakfast. Lunch is served buffet-style with a selection of hot dishes, salads, cold meat and cheeses. Dinner can be ordered from a set menu. Fresh bread, baked on the premises, is served with every meal. The chef can also cater for special dietary requirements.
Accommodation is in 8 bedrooms, consisting of 4 doubles and 4 family size rooms. Each unit has its own en-suite bathroom, mosquito nets, overhead fan and a private verandah that overlooks the Chobe River.
This area is teeming with elephants in their hundreds and buffalo in their thousands. Lion are sighted almost daily as are many species of antelope including impala, sable, giraffe and warthog. Pods of hippo bathe in the river and crocs bask in the sunshine.
A feature at Garden Lodge is the variety of animals that visit the garden in front of the lodge. The resident hippo never misses an opportunity for a nibble or an impromptu photo shoot and bushbuck, waterbuck, serval cat, genet and on one occasion a hyaena was spotted on the lawn!
The lodge organizes activities that revolve around game viewing by vehicle and boat into Chobe National Park. As Chobe is a hot, dry region for most of the year, wildlife is dependent on the river for water. Game drives and boat cruises are truly spectacular.
