Kings Pool Camp

Linyanti | Botswana

Kings Pool Camp is located in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, which borders the western boundary of the famous Chobe National Park. Situated to overlook the oxbow-shaped Kings Pool Lagoon and the Linyanti River, it is set in a private reserve characterized by open grasslands, mopane and mixed terminalia woodlands, riverine forest and the Savute Channel.

Elephant lovers can admire huge herds at this camp, which takes it's name from King Leopold of Sweden, who honeymooned in the area in the mid 1900's. Elephants are one of the reserves prime attractions, along with spectacular wildlife concentrations, excellent birding, all under the watchful eye of experienced, trained and accredited guides. Visitors to Kings Pool are transferred from Maun or Kasane by light aircraft and if required an inter-camp transfer on to either Duma Tau or Savuti Camps can be organized. (By light aircraft, road, boat or mekoro).

Many guests of Kings Pool comment on the high standard of accommodation and facilities, friendly and helpful staff, tasty meals and exciting, high quality game viewing trips. There is a huge amount of space in which to relax, take a splash in the pool, or to sip a cocktail/sundowner in the sun or shade. Alternately, you can review your pictures on their computer (no internet access though).

An added attraction at Kings Pool is the raised walkways, which allow animals to wander freely through the camp to and from the water. The lounge, dining room and pub areas are on expansive elevated decks, and there is a pool and an open-air 'kgotla' for dining under the stars. The camp's chefs prides themselves on hearty and healthy menus, and they are only too willing to accompany you on a guided tour of the kitchen, but not without handing you a few recipes to try at home before you leave! Your guides will be happy to interact with you at all times; they communicate regularly to share their sightings.

Electricity to the camp is supplied via a 220v generator, that runs power to the kitchen and main areas when guests are not in camp. On return from your daily activities, the generators are generally switched off (for peace in camp) and a 12v battery power system (charged by the generator) is used for lighting and fans in each tent 24hrs/day. Video batteries can be charged when guests are on game drives, so it is a good idea to make sure you've brought a spare battery and charging unit along with you.

Accommodation is in 9 well-appointed canvas, thatched tents and 1 honeymoon tent. They each have a large bedroom area, fans, lights lounge, private plunge pool and 'sala'. The spacious en-suite bathrooms are tiled with double showers, 2 hand-basins, and the outdoor shower brings the more adventurous closer to nature! If that isn't enough, then enjoy the fabulous year-round views of the lagoon, from the comfort of your tent.

Rest and recuperate to the background noises at night of grunting hippo and warthog, croaking frogs and the occasional roar of a hungry or rampant lion. It's all music to your ears and makes camping in a tent, albeit a very luxurious one, a real blast!

Linyati is famous for its elephant concentrations in the winter months and for superb all-year round game viewing. Huge herds of elephant parade along the waterways and lagoons and at the waterholes scattered along the Savuti Channel. Towards the end of the dry months, sable and roan antelope can be seen in the mopane woodland with lion, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog waiting to feast on unsuspecting prey, that includes impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, red lechwe and tsessebe.

Activities from Kings Pool Campl revolve around seasonal wildlife behaviour. They are diverse and have been especially designed to allow travellers time to explore on water, land and occasionally by foot. (90% game drives, 10% water activities.) All game activities are lead by a professional guide.

Day and night game drives
Are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles along the banks of the Linyanti River and the Savuti Channel. The camp has 4 x 10 seater Land Rovers, with a maximum of 7 guests per vehicle. Night drives on the channel are superb.
Hides
There are many hides in the area, especially constructed to allow close-up wildlife viewing away from a vehicle, and so as not to disturb the animals. One of the best hides is right at the source of the Savuti, and many species of game and bird life can usually be spotted here. It is not unusual for animal lovers and birders to spend quality time watching game coming down to drink in these enclosures, especially at the original underground hide, with eye-level water. Watching elephant feet and trunks, almost within touching distance whilst sat safely inside, is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experience's on offer!
Game walks
Join a guided walking tour of the area and experience wildlife as nature intended.
Motor Boating:
Boat cruises on the Linyati River (water levels allowing) are hugely enjoyable, memorable and offer a completely different aspect to game viewing than from a vehicle. Spot numerous and diverse species of bird, in addition to a huge variety of game, that are attracted to the reed and papyrus swamps, especially in the drier winter months, as you gently meander along the channels and waterways. (Please note; there are no mokoro trips).
Birding
Ornithology is outstanding at Kings Pool Camp, and the Linyanti Concession is an internationally recognised Important Bird Area (IBA). In addition to the Okavango specials and drier mopane woodland species, the kori bustard, ostrich, secretary bird and carmine bee-eaters (in summer) can all be spotted. High concentrations of birds of prey and raptors, such as eagles and Dickinson's kestrel, can also be expected.
Fishing:
Fishing trips by boat can be arranged.
