Camp Moremi

Moremi Reserve | Okavango Delta | Botswana

Camp Moremi is located right on the beautiful Xakanaxa Lagoon, on the eastern edge of the famous Okavango Delta. It is situated inside the Moremi Game Reserve notably at the south-western tip of the Mopane Tongue. Over the centuries, an amazing environment of open grasslands, seasonal floodplains and ancient mopane forests have formed a diverse riverine habitat. This process has created a magnificent wildlife sanctuary, an obvious favourite for wildlife enthusiasts for decades.

Access to Camp Moremi is by fly-in and transfer by road from Maun or Kasane airports to Xakanaxa airstrip. Camp Moremi is also accessible by self-drive 4x4 vehicle or by boat transfer from Camp Okavango or Xugana Island Lodge.

The main lodge is shaded by giant trees, and is of an elevated thatch and timber structure. Although this camp is one of the oldest of its kind in Botswana, it is very well-maintained and many of its guests comment on how things still look 'brand new'. The ebony canopy opens out to a section of lawn, which is trimmed regularly by night time, grazing hippos. Other animals venture into the camp, typical of a wild, safari camp of the region, but (thankfully) elephants are kept at bay by a few strands of electrified wire around the perimeter.

Guests can relax in the main lounge with a book from the wildlife reference library. Most of the walls are partially open, which allows a most welcome breeze to circulate by means of old-fashioned overhead fans. Breakfast and lunch are taken in the central lounge area and the evening meal is served in the dining room. A comprehensively stocked bar is on the same level. Other facilities include a secluded swimming pool with sun deck, a thatched boma, and a raised observation platform, with an excellent line of sight to the Xakanaxa Lagoon. There is also a well-stocked curio shop, that sells branded clothes, T-shirts, souvenirs, DVD's and books.

Accommodation at Camp Moremi is in one of 11 Meru-style tents, each positioned on raised teak platforms. They are fitted with conventional doors, which must be kept locked at all times due to intruding baboons and squirrels. These units are well-furnished. Sisal matting and bright rugs cover the floor and wooden wardrobes, luggage racks, dressing tables, a table-top electric fan and director's chairs are standard. Each room has a tea/coffee station. The private bathroom is in a separate tent, with flush toilet, large shower with glass screen, mirror and wash basin.

At the end of camp, and wound round a great old jackalberry tree (Diospyros mespiliformis) is number 11, or the Honeymoon Suite. It has the same luxurious facilities as the other tents, but with the added attraction of being elevated around 5 separate trunks of the tree, that grows right through the centre of the room!

Power is supplied by a generator, available during the day and evening. Each suite is equipped with a 220v AC plug suitable for hair-dryers and for re-charging camera batteries. There is inverted 12v DC lighting for night time use, whilst the generator is switched off.

The Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for frequent sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as the African wild dog, whose numbers are deteriorating rapidly in other areas. Huge herds of antelope arrive constantly in and around the lagoons perimeter. Exceptional and varied birdlife has been recorded in the Xakanaxa region with seasonal sightings of large flights of herons, egrets, storks and other waders. Many species of sparrow hawk, buzzard and kite are regular visitors. Tracking big game is the main focus of activities at Camp Moremi.
