Little Mombo
Moremi Reserve | Okavango Delta | Botswana
Little Mombo is built under the shade of large trees in the centrer of the Okavango Delta, the camp overlooks part of the same floodplain as Mombo Camp itself. However, Little Mombo is all about privacy – the tented guest rooms are a fair distance from the rest of the camp - and it has private communal areas (all in the same design and feel as Mombo). This is an ideal destination for a small group to hire in full, but also offers the perfect retreat for anyone wishing to get away from it all.
Just as at Mombo Camp, the connecting walkways are raised up to 2m on wooden decking under cool makuti thatch. This design allows game to wander freely through the camp - but at the same time allowing for guest safety. (Visitors are accompanied to their rooms in the hours of darkness).
The dining room, bar and living area overlook the open plain in front of the camp. They are situated to look over the widest part of the floodplain, an area often visited by vast numbers of game; including all the predators and the views from the communal areas are stunning. It is not uncommon to overlook the floodplain enjoying a diverse selection of wildlife. Hidden away to the left of the main area is the camp's plunge pool; a welcome respite to escape the heat of the day.
Meals are similar in timings and substance to the main Mombo Camp, and are prepared and cooked by the same team. But expect the unexpected at Little Mombo. Dinner was delayed one evening some years ago! The chef came into the dining room to make an announcement. A lion was on it's way! Guests watched in amazement from the deck as not 1, but 7 lionesses walked past, followed by 17 cubs. Then 4 big males known as Bob Marley and the Wailer's followed. The females were clearly intent on hunting!
Accommodation is in the 3 tents, designed in exactly the same way as Mombo Camp. They are equipped with huge 4-poster beds, en-suite bathrooms, outside showers, a fan and individual private sala's for a midday siesta.
- Game drive
- Morning and afternoon game drives on the Mombo Concession area within the Moremi Game Reserve are the main activities at Little Mombo. As with Mombo Camp, it is stressed that wildlife sightings can be unpredictable and as game often wanders into the camp, schedules can change! They are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles, enhancing your view and affording the best opportunities to watch and spot wildlife. A maximum of 7 passengers are taken at any one time, affording each viewer the comfort of their own outside seat.
- Night drives
- As with its bigger sister camp, and as Little Mombo is situated in a national park (Moremi Game Reserve), unfortunately no game viewing is allowed after 18h30, but will change when the new Moremi Wildlife Reserve rules come into effect.
- Walks
- Short game walks can be offered during siesta time (usually the time predators are also taking a nap!) on request, when the camp manager feels it is safe to do so.
- Birding
- Waterfowl and waders being particularly common in this region.
