Mombo Camp

Moremi Reserve | Okavango Delta | Botswana

Mombo Camp is located in the Mombo Concession on the northern tip of Chief's Island, within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators who roam freely in, what can be described as a 'Garden of Eden'. This part of the Okavango Delta is only accessible by a short fly-in and transfer, from either Maun or Kasane.

Because Mombo has a fantastic reputation for wildlife, it's fame for game means that it is sometimes booked for up to 12-18 months in advance, such is the demand for this camp! It is also the only place in Botswana to see both black and white rhinos and Poster the top rhino expert in the country, gives fascinating evening presentations to guests a few times a week.

The camp itself has been constructed under large, shady trees that overlook the floodplains, all teeming with wildlife all year round. The main living and dining areas are under thatch, and the 'boma' makes for a delicious dinner setting under the stars. All areas of the lodge, including the long verandah, sala and lounge section afford spectacular views of the immediate environment. Huge, comfortable leather sofas with matching velvet cushions, offer a relaxing venue to unwind after one's journey or safari. The open fronted section is surrounded by polished mahogany floors that lead away to the bar and onto the camp's library – an ideal spot to relax and shy away with a good book.

Meals are taken on inside and outside dining areas, normally as a group setting. Wine and dine on a majestic eucalyptus carved table, set with chunky made-to-order silver cutlery, whilst sat on comfortable canvas and teak directors chairs. There is also a private decking area where al fresco meals are served under the stars.

The light continental breakfast (served before the early morning game drive) consists of cereals, tea/coffee/juices and pastries, all served in the dining area. Brunch will be served after the game drive, typically consisting of a selection of breakfast and lunch dishes, including freshly baked bread. Afternoon tea is served around 16h00 and consists of a selection of sweet and savoury snacks!

Mombo prides itself on it's culinary delights and a tuna carpaccio and chilli calamari are just a couple of tasters of the head-chef Craig’s menu. To attempt and succeed at serving such tasty seafood in a landlocked country is no mean feat! The 3-course dinner - the starter and desert is served - whilst the main course is usually buffet-style, is followed by coffee and liqueurs served at the camp fire. The open fire-pit is a great way to end the day, exchanging wildlife adventures and travel stories whilst sipping a night-cap!

Guests can cool off after their flight or game drive in the plunge pool and there is a 'nifty' little gift shop with a small selection of post cards available. (Your card will even be posted for free!) Branded clothing such as fleeces, gloves and hats can also be purchased, ideal for those cold winter days and nights. Hot water bottles are supplied at night in your room and on game drives during cold spells!

Accommodation at Mombo Camp comprises of 9 spacious tents raised 2m above the ground. Bathrooms are en-suite, with both an indoor and a private outside shower. A fan is also supplied. All of the rooms are connected by elevated walkways to each other and the main camp area. Power is supplied through a generator that runs mainly in the day time and for extra peace and tranquillity is switched off on guests return. A battery system takes over during the hours of darkness. Unbelievable concentrations of game occur right in front of the camp and it is not unusual for guests to find animals wandering in and around (and sometimes) under their rooms!

Lion sightings are frequent and on a typical game drive at the camp it is possible (but not guaranteed) to see leopard, wild dog, spotted hyena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, white rhino, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest and Burchell's zebra. As it is not unusual for hippo and buffalo to come right up to the camp, you need to be accompanied to your room by a guide at night!

Game drive
The activities at Mombo Camp revolve around morning and afternoon game drives on Chief's Island, however it is stressed that daily wildlife sightings tend to be unpredictable and game can quite often be in camp, so therefore any planned itinerary can be thrown out of schedule! Their experienced and enthusiastic guides are both knowledgeable and passionate about their job and the environment. Every turn in the road is filled with a series of sightings, not just a solo animal but huge great herds of a variety of animals. Open 4x4s provide the perfect vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains game and all the predators.
Night drives
As Mombo Camp is situated in a national park (Moremi Game Reserve), unfortunately no game viewing is allowed after 18h30, but will change when the new Moremi Wildlife Reserve rules come into effect.
Walks
Short game walks can be offered during siesta time on request when the camp manager feels it is safe to do so.
Birding
Waterfowl and waders being particularly common in this region.
