Xigera Camp
Moremi Reserve | Okavango Delta | Botswana
Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) is a luxury tented camp situated within the Moremi Game Reserve and set on a riverine island on the Xigera Concession. Entrance to the camp is via a footbridge over the permanently flowing river and due to its location in a permanent wetland, there are excellent wildlife and game viewing opportunities. Xigera boasts the highest density of the rare and elusive sitatunga antelope anywhere in the Okavango Delta.
Access to Xigera Concession and its luxury tented camp, Xigera Camp, is by fly-in and transfer via a short flight from either Maun or Kasane. To and from Maun is around 30min, and to and from Kasane around 1hr 20min. The airstrip is a short 10min drive from the camp.
The dining and pub areas have been built under thatched roofs, with great views of the surrounding environment, especially the goings on, in and around the river. Raised wooden walkways connect the main area to the lodge, and these pave the way for easier animal movement throughout the camp, whilst ensuring guest safety.
Accommodation is in 10 luxury tents (including 2 honeymoon tents) elevated off the ground on wooden decks, affording sublime views over the floodplain and lagoon. Entrance is through a sliding door and en-suite facilities, 4-poster beds with mosquito nets, as well as an outdoor shower are standard.
The camp is equipped with a 220v generator that supplies electricity to the main areas when guests are away enjoying their activities. Upon their return, the generators are usually turned off to maintain a peaceful environment. A 220v inverter system kicks in and is available 24/7 for lighting and fans in tents. Camera batteries can be charged any time but hair-dryers are not allowed. (Just stick your head out of the window for a few minutes after your shower!) Water at this camp is electrically heated.
Red lechwe and sitatunga occur widely throughout the Delta, but can be difficult to observe owing to the dense mass of reeds associated with the area. Surprisingly for an area of permanent water, predators such as lion, leopard and hyena are on the island. There are loads of buffalo, hippo and crocs, sharing the waterways with large herds of elephant as well as smaller groups or individual tsessebe, warthog, wildebeest, giraffe, impala, kudu and bushbuck that tread warily around.

- Special attraction
- A unique feature at this camp is the footbridge which lies to the front of the camp. It is the only way predators can cross without having to swim the river. A pit has been dug out and filled with soft sand and is known as the 'camp newspaper'. Each morning guests can discover which animals have passed through the camp the previous night by 'reading their prints'. The sand is raked smooth every evening and lion, hyena and leopard pass through camp almost every night! Apparently one night a hungry hyena found the leather sofas an interesting texture to chew on!
