Nata Lodge
Nata | Botswana
Nata Lodge is situated 10km from Nata village, the junction to Kasane, Francistown and Maun. Many travellers pass through on their way to the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. It is the perfect place to stopover for a trip into Nata Sanctuary, Makgadikgadi National Park and Nxai Pan National Park.
This region incorporates a number of salt pans and vast grass plains. Although not visited by large numbers of game and predators as in other larger parks, the sanctuary is a birders paradise, especially after seasonal rains. Nata Lodge is a comfortable and convenient stopover in its own right, and many a weary traveller has been grateful for the opportunity to stay here.
Facilities include a restaurant, bar and lounge area, gift shop and a swimming pool. A continental or English breakfast can be ordered and dinner is served buffet-style in high season or from their 'a la carte' menu in quieter times. Saturday evening is set aside as the weekly 'braai night'. The pool deck is a favourite venue for a sundowner and a chat with fellow travellers on the day's sightings and adventures. An added feature at Nata Lodge is to view the large family of nocturnal bush babies who entertain guests at their own feeding table after the sun has set.
Accommodation is in a combination of A-frame chalets, standard chalets, luxury chalets or safari tents. Ceiling fans and in-room safes are standard in all 4 levels.
- 8 x standard chalets: These are built on elevated platforms that overlook the old Didibakwe river. They are set on the northern boundary of the lodge under the shade of Ilala palm trees.
- 2 x luxury chalets: Majestic outdoor showers and 'ball and claw' baths add to the luxury.
- 12 A-framed stone thatch chalets: These are set on the southern boundary of the lodge and are equipped with semi-open bathrooms and stone verandas.
- 10 x luxury safari tents: These are built on raised wooden platforms, which are nestled under the a canopy of marula trees. Features include en-suite bathrooms plus the standard amenities of the other chalets.
Mammal species in the sanctuary are limited to antelope such as kudu and springbok, as well as springhares, jackals, foxes and monkeys.
The helmeted guinea fowl, crested francolin, yellow hornbill, pied and arrow-marked babblers, glossy starling, Meyers parrot and the paradise whydah can be observed regularly. As the Nata River Delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata Sanctuary, it forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands. Over 165 different species have been recorded in the area.
The main activities centre around trips into the Nata Sanctuary although the shady tree canopy surrounding the lodge is a hive of activity in itself. Guests do not even have to leave the lodge to observe a variety of species that visit the bird feeding area. This is an active water feature that provides ornithologists of all standards the opportunity to observe many species of bird from the comfort of the pool deck, open bar or restaurant.
