Savute Under Canvas Lodge
Savuti | Botswana
Savute Under Canvas is a semi-permanent tented camp, that relocates around the Savute Channel area every 5 or 6 days to conform with the Chobe National Park rules. The sites are located near watering holes, providing an ideal short-term base to observe high levels of wildlife activity. This combines all the advantages of mobile camping, in secluded and remote areas, with very little contact with other tourists or vehicles to disturb your stay. The luxury and adventure stay with you throughout.
Access to the camp is by fly-in and transfer by light aircraft from Maun or Kasane airfields to Savute airstrip and the lodge can be reached by self-drive 4x4 vehicle.
The Savute (or Savuti) Channel, was until recently a dry, open grassland, home to numerous plains game and abundant predators. For decades the river had remained dry, wiping out its valued wildlife in the process. But as a result of northern Botswana's very strong seismic activity in April 2008, not to mention an outstanding flood season, the river is alive and flowing. Game and wildlife enthusiasts alike are flooding back.
Although Savute Under Canvas is a mobile camp, and the kitchen facilities tend to be basic, they pride themselves on the high standard of 'camp cuisine'. Breakfast and light lunches revolve around the day's activities and the evening usually begins with a pre-dinner drink around the camp fire, the perfect time to boast of the day's sightings and adventures. A decent selection of wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks can be enjoyed with your 3-course dinner.
Savute Under Canvas camp has 5 spacious, walk-in tents. En-suite bathroom, flush toilet, shaving mirror, tin basin, water jug and a selection of complimentary soaps are standard. Each unit is furnished with a comfortable twin or double bed, with sisal matting covering the floor. Rechargeable lanterns are conveniently placed on your bedside tables and other amenities include a hanging rail, canvas wardrobe and luggage chest.
A rolled-up doorway leads from your bathroom to your bucket shower, and hot water is supplied after your activities. The excitement continues as a variety of game follow the well-worn trails to the watering holes, observed from the comfort of your shady tent verandah, offering a superb vantage point to riverside life.
Large herds of migrating zebra congregate in the summer months, feeding on the nutritious grasslands created by the rains. Huge herds of elephant also browse and graze in the region, and the seasonal zebra attract predators, especially lion. Hippo and crocs are expected to make a comeback in the river.
Fish eagle, pied kingfishers, egrets and a variety of wading birds have returned and other varieties of fish and birds, should start re-appearing.
