Drotsky's Cabins

Shakawe | Pan Handle | Botswana

Drotsky's Cabins are situated on the banks of the Okavango Panhandle. They are around 8km south of the radio mast in Shakawe, after a left turn off the tar road and on to a sandy track leading eastwards. Crossing the old road up the panhandle, Drotsky's Cabins are a further 3km on. (The drive across can be negotiated by 2WD vehicle, but as the sand is very thick in places a 4WD vehicle is recommended).

Drotsky's Cabins, run by Jan and Eileen Drotsky, are in the perfect location to launch your Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve Safari. It is also the ideal base if you're driving on the west side of the Delta and heading north to Namibia and in particular Mahango National Park, Bwabwata National Park and the Caprivi Strip.

The camp is set on a high bank overlooking the river, which is several kilometres wide. The network of deep water channels and large beds of papyrus reeds make this excellent birdwatching and fishing territory. This part of the panhandle is short of decent game apart from hippos and crocs, but the amount of sitatunga in this area is simply amazing. There is a restaurant and bar in the main thatched building and the decking overlooks the panhandle.

Accommodation is in 6 chalets which are of an A-frame design. They have low brick side walls that are topped with a tall, angular thatched roof. Two of the chalets can sleep 2 people and the other 4, which are slightly bigger, can sleep up to 4 people. They are fitted with twin beds and are insect-proofed with mesh on the window and lit by mains electricity. They are comfortable, but simply furnished. Floor rugs and a tabletop electric fan are standard.

Angling and birding are the main activities at Drotsky's Cabin.
