Xigera Mokoro & Walking Trail

Moremi Reserve | Okavango Delta | Botswana

There is no better way to experience the Okavango than to camp out on its remote islands. Trips will operate every 3 days from early May to the end of October to fit in with the rise and fall of the annual flood waters.

The adventure which is based in the Xigera Concession, which forms part of the Moremi Park, starts as soon as you land at the airstrip (arrivals should be no later than 12h00). You will be met by your senior guide and BaYei polers. A short drive takes you to the starting point and after a safety talk, it's time to jump into your mokoro and set off into the wilderness. Mekoro's are dugout canoes propelled by a guide/poler who uses a long pole to push the craft through the Delta's shallow, winding channels.

Personnel, supplies, luggage and camping equipment are divided accordingly so an individual group is totally self-sufficient and can operate at it's own pace.

You will sleep in stand-up 2-man tents that will be illuminated by battery lamps. Comfortable bedrolls, duvets and pillows are supplied. All meals will be cooked on an open fire and served on a table. Ablutions consist of tented bucket showers and a shared 'long drop' toilet for your convenience at each location.

Day 1
Stop for a picnic lunch and find a suitable island to put up camp by mid-afternoon. The paddlers set up the camp and all meals are cooked on the campfire. The tents are specially designed with a netting top to view the stars as you drop off to sleep.
Day 2
After an early breakfast followed by a walk, the paddlers break camp and load the mokoro's. After the walking safari, it's time to set off for another island, enjoying the Delta and its wildlife whilst relaxing in the dugouts. Stops along the way to walk and explore for any reason are the norm, and the rhythm and pace of the trip depends on the moment.
Day 3
After breakfast, pack up your personal luggage and cruise back to the airstrip (arriving around 13h00) for the transfer to the airstrip and flight out.
